The moon is used as a reference a lot throughout the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The title itself showed importance of the moon. As it is used in the novel, the moon has an effect on the characters’ actions. No important events happened in broad daylight, and they were always told to meet at midnight, when the moon would be gleaming. The morning indicated the end of the night’s events.
Shakespeare emphasized the role of imagination in love in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. An overactive imagination helped and hurt the characters. In Act Four, when the characters awake from sleep and are told by Egeus they were to marry whom they loved, they all considered the events before awaking a dream. Demetrius says, “Are you sure that we are awake? It seems to me that yet we sleep, we dream” (IV, i 127) They are excusing whatever good or bad events happened and only worrying about the fact that they all finally have who they love. While watching the performance of Pyramus and Thisbe, Hippolyta says, “This is the silliest stuff that ever I heard” (V, i 147) In reply, Theseus says, “The best in this kind are but shadows, and the worst are no worse if imagination amend them” (V, i 149) Thesus is saying that she must use her imagination in order to enjoy the play. In the end of the play, Puck tells the audience to use our imagination. That if we did not enjoy the play, to just pretend we were sleeping. “If we shadows have offended, think but this, and all is mended. That you have but slumb’red here while these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme, no more yielding but a dream” (V, i 163) Shakespeare wants us to have an imagination, but still to have a sense of reality.
I’m straight edge for myself, not for you, not for kids at shows, not to be cool, not for anybody. I’m sober for myself. If I wanted to get high or drunk or whatever, it’s readily available to me. News Flash: It’s 2011 and a lot teenagers/kids smoke, drink and do drugs. There are drug addicts and alcoholics in my family, I don’t want to be a part of that. Not for a second. I’m proud of who I am and I’m proud of the title I hold. No amount of bullshit I get, no matter how much people say I’m not or try to convince me otherwise will change my mind. I plan to die straight edge, I will never take a sip of alcohol, a drag, snort a line or what the fuck ever. This is something I’m incredibly proud of, I want to abstain for myself. Claiming edge is something that I thought over for a long time, and finally decided it’s really what I want. I don’t care if every single person in the world sells out. I will still stand strong. I’m sure I’m just going to be told “oh you say this now, you’re just 13, blah blah blah.” It just really strikes a nerve that how adamant about something that I am, I’m just not taken seriously due to my age. I think that I’m mature enough to make the decisions I have thus far in my life. I’ve come to the conclusion that there are some people that you just can’t reason with, and I just need to prove them wrong.
